This was the first year I wrote a lot of comics. Inevitably, some of the magic as a comic book reader is now gone. (Although I am infinitely more forgiving of the bad comics, too.) Now I reflexively count the panels on a page, the beats in a scene, the arcs in a book, etc etc. It’s a different kind of magic, but I’m still getting used to it.
Despite that, these comics managed to shock and surprise me and fill me with awe and love in ways I did not expect. I wasn’t counting panels when I was reading them. So to me, they are the best. I feel I owe them something, even if it’s just recognition in a pithy list on my dumb blog.
