Intolerable Cruelty (2003)
Despite being a huge Coen Brothers fan, I’ve avoided this for years. Probably because it was marketed like a shitty romantic comedy and it has the reputation of being a bit of an embarrassment. A non-Coen Brothers film, if you will.
That was stupid. This movie was a really enjoyable surprise, with all the things I love about the Coen Brothers: strong performances from an eclectic cast, razor sharp dialog, offbeat humor, and an airtight, 100mph plot. I loved every second.
Yes, it’s a romantic comedy, but it’s not Bride Wars; it’s His Girl Friday or Bringing Up Baby. (Actually, it’s a legit, late entry into the pantheon of remarriage comedies.) If you loved the Coen love for Hawks, Cukor, and Sturgis on display in Hudsucker Proxy, you’ll dig this.
Clooney will go full scumbag in a way many of his peers won’t, and even Zeta-Jones was good. It’s no Lebowski or Millers Crossing or No Country For Old Men, but it’s totally worth watching. Gonna tackle Ladykillers soon.
